Talk Show Hosts Dennis Miller, Steve Wilkos to Play in L.A. Charity Golf Scramble to Benefit USA Cares

WHO: Dennis Miller offers his unique take on the day’s topics with comedy and satire on his daily radio show, “The Dennis Miller Show,” launched by Westwood One in March 2007. Miller is a five-time Emmy award winner for his critically acclaimed half-hour, live talk show “Dennis Miller Live,” which had a nine-year run on HBO. He was the host and executive producer of CNBC’s “Dennis Miller,” an interview talk show featuring reasoned discourse, opinion and humor.

Steve Wilkos is the host of NBC Universal Domestic Television Distribution’s nationally syndicated series “The Steve Wilkos Show.” He is both a Marine Corps and Chicago Police veteran. Prior to his own show, Wilkos filled in for Jerry Springer as host of the long-running “Jerry Springer Show” on more than 50 episodes.

Mike O’Hearn holds four Mr. (Natural) Universe titles, was Mr. California, Mr. USA, Mr. America and Mr. International, and was voted one of the 12 greatest physiques of all times by the fitness industry. A fierce competitor and undefeated in the Joust, Mike can be seen in NBC’s hit television series “American Gladiators” where he is known as “Titan.”

USA Cares To Be Featured on Good Morning America

WHO: USA Cares Executive Director Bill Nelson leads USA Cares, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that helps military families bear the burdens of service with financial and advocacy support. Its mission: to assist wounded warriors and their families, to prevent home foreclosures and evictions and to help with basic needs during financial crisis. Bionic Gloves Helping USA Cares Give a 'Hand Up'

Bionic Gloves, sister company to Louisville Slugger, is partnering with USA Cares in support of its mission to help military families. Better on a Bagel Supporting USA Cares in November
USA Cares will be a part of Radcliff eatery Better on a Bagel’s Charity of the Month program, an effort to give back to the local community. Five cents on every bagel sold in November will be donated to the organization. (More»)

California Knitting Shop Wrapping Up Help for USA Cares

A yarn and knitting business in southern California has stepped up to make volunteer contributions to the USA Cares Operation Lap Wrap program by both donating blankets and offering discounts to customers. (More»)


Boonedock's Sees Red on Fridays
A new business in Vine Grove has joined the USA Cares Red Shirt Fridays campaign to show the community it supports military families. A USA Cares Family Resource Coordinator mentioned the Red Shirt Fridays program to the Boonedock’s manager while at the restaurant, and owner Sherry Boggs immediately came out to the table with a donation. She didn’t hesitate when asked if she would be interested in joining the team. Boggs was in the Air Force, and her husband Joseph was in the Army. And they know Vine Grove is very pro military, which made the decision that much easier. (More»)

Cardinal Health Marks 9/11 with "I Care Too!" Tribute
Employees of Cardinal Health in Radcliff wore USA Cares “I Care Too!” red shirts on Thursday in memory of those who died and served during the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The employees gathered for a photo to pay tribute to the sacrifices made and assistance rendered seven years ago. (More»)

USA Cares Earns 2008 Newman's Own Award

USA Cares recently received a Newman’s Own Foundation $5,000 grant in recognition of its mission to provide military families with financial support and other critical resources in their time of need.

The awards are co-sponsored by the Fisher House Foundation Inc., Newman’s Own Inc. and Military Times Media Group with the purpose of recognizing homefront organizations for their contributions to military quality of life. (More»)


Sales of Children's Book to Support USA Cares
A soon-to-be-released children’s book, “A Glove of Their Own,” is contributing a portion of its sales to USA Cares.
A Glove of Their Own” is about “giving back and extending friendship is written between the lines of this story; a story of kids who play with little, worn-out equipment, without coaches or concession stands, all for the love of the game,” Bob Salomon said on the book’s web site, http://www.agloveoftheirown.com/. Salomon, a father of two and Little League baseball coach, along with authors Debbie Moldovan, Keri Conkling and Lisa Funari-Willever, created the book. (More»)

Hope Comes Together to Assist Operation Iraqi Freedom Veteran
Vermont National Guard Solder, Stephen Larkin of Brookfield, VT was deployed with his unit, HHC 2nd Battalion, part of Task Force Green Mountain to Iraq in 2006. During that time he received back injuries while guarding the Iraq/Kuwait border at camp Navistar. Stephen has also been diagnosed with post traumatic stress syndrome (PTSD). (More»)

USA Cares Inc., a leading non-profit organization providing post-9/11 veterans and military families with financial support and other critical resources, has named Steven Silver to serve as its West Texas Regional Manager. First Federal Savings Bank Holds Second Annual Golf Event
Larry J. Hawkins, Executive Vice President of First Federal Savings Bank thanked 96 golfers for coming out and supporting USA Cares today. For the second straight year First Federal sponsored a charity golf scramble to assist USA Cares in helping military families in the Fort Knox area as well as all around the USA. The Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) says "Thanks" to USA Cares
The largest and most influential association of retired military officers met at Fort Knox for their monthly meeting. On their agenda was recognition for USA Cares as MOAA Chapter President Jinx Furlough presented a check for $500 to Executive Director Bill Nelson. (More»)

Boonedock's Sees Red on Fridays
Sherry Boggs the owner of Boonedock’s located at 6645 Flaherty Road in Vine Grove, KY was excited to hear about the Red Shirt Friday program at USA Cares and didn’t hesitate when asked if she would be interested in joining the team. Sherry herself having been in the Air Force and her husband Joseph in the Army knew full well that there community was very pro military only made the decision that much easier. (More»)

International Liasion Officers Meet at USA Cares
At a barbeque held in May of this year, a group of Fort Knox international liaison officers made an unusual request. They asked the participants from the Fort Knox Historical Community not to bring the traditional “hostess gifts” but rather to make donations to USA Cares instead. (More»)

Hardin County Water District No. 1 & Veolia Water Scramble for USA Cares
Brett Pyles, Operations Manager for the Hardin County Water District No. 1 presented a check before an assembled crowd of about 120 golfers awaiting the “Shotgun Start” of the Annual Charity Golf Scramble sponsored by Hardin County Water District No. 1 and Veolia Water. The Lindsey Golf Course at Fort Knox was the site of the event and USA Cares Executive Director Bill Nelson, accompanied by volunteers and staff members, was on hand to receive the generous proceeds. USA Cares Names a New Key Volunteer in Georgia
Cecelia Jeffery, the Volunteer and Outreach Coordinator for USA Cares jumped out of her chair and shouted “She’s on fire! That woman in Georgia is just too good for words!” After the commotion had died down and other office personnel learned it was joy not tragedy that prompted the outburst, Cecelia went on to add “Jennifer Housley is a God-send. We have needed someone in Georgia and now we have the best person we could have ever imagined.” (More»)

Major League Baseball Donates to USA Cares

Major League Baseball Charities teamed with the Advertising Council to create a special website called, “WELCOMEBACKVETERANS.ORG”. Its purpose is to educate Americans on the problems faced by Veterans who have served in Iraq or Afghanistan, as well as to encourage American's to support our troops. A Case of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder - How Four Organizations Came Forward to Help a Military Family in Distress
Kentucky National Guardsman, Sergeant Mark A. Kinslow took a sniper bullet to the head on February 13th, 2007 and lived to tell about it. What he and his family did not anticipate were the lingering after-effects of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and possibly Traumatic Brain Injury and the difficulties they would pose in life after service. William F. “Bill” Roller served on the nuclear submarine USS Daniel Webster as a nuclear weapons technician during the Vietnam era. Today the crew of the USS Kentucky, “The Thoroughbred of the Fleet” presented him with a photograph of their sub and had a good, mutually appreciative discussion of how life under the sea has changed. Decorated Combat Veteran Joins USA Cares - Key Volunteer in California also has a California Highway Patrol Badge
Michelle Fournier has spent almost twenty years in the United States Army including two tours of duty in Iraq. Along the way she has amassed a host of decorations including two Bronze Stars. However she is not showing any signs of slowing down and now keeps her active Army Reserve uniform in the closet and carries a California Highway Patrol badge as she starts each work day. And, on the weekends and days off, she fights to ensure that the families of the Service Members still deployed do not suffer because of their loved one’s deployment in Iraq or Afghanistan. To do this she has teamed with USA Cares as the Key Volunteer for the State of California. (More»)

Dennis Miller to Serve as USA Cares Spokesperson - Nonprofit provides quality of life assistance to military families in need

Comedian and radio show host Dennis Miller announced today that he will serve as the National Spokesperson for USA Cares, a Kentucky-based nonprofit organization that provides financial assistance to military families in need.

The historic Seelbach Hotel was the scene of USA Cares first ever gala in celebration of five years of service to US Military Families on Saturday, March 29th. USA Cares distributes over $265,000 in Wal-Mart Cards to families of deployed and wounded Service Personnel
USA Cares, a world-wide non-profit 501(c) 3 organization, distributes pre-paid Wal-Mart cards on an emergency basis to assist the families of deployed Military Personnel who are experiencing difficulty as the result of a loved one’s service. “The people who we supply these cards to are in immediate need of things for the family like food, fuel to get to medical appointments, work, their unit or other essentials,” said Cecilia Jeffery, Volunteer and Outreach Coordinator with USA Cares. “Wiring of these cards to a store near the family allows us to respond quicker than any other mechanism we have ever used” concluding that “the availability of Wal-Mart stores and the broad line of products they have available can handle a host of situations.” (More»)

USA Cares gives $1 million in assistance in record time
With a husband suffering from lung and spine disease after his tour in Iraq, bills piling up, and seven children to care for, the military spouse was at a loss. She wasn’t sure if anyone could help them catch up on their bills while her husband awaited a lung transplant and Department of Veterans Affairs reviewed their case. (More»)
