It is one of the best things that ever happened for our organization here in the Kentuckiana area since the great folks at Kroger and WAVE Television started selling ‘Support the Troops’ yard signs back in 2003. That is how we got started and now, six years later, we have provided post 9/11 Veterans and their families in all 50 states with assistance when they have needed help.”


Radcliff Walmart Presents $2,500 to USA Cares

USA Cares Announces Texas Program to help Veterans get PTSD/TBI Treatment

According to USA Cares Executive Director, Bill Nelson, “This program is designed to bridge the financial gaps that occur when a veteran who is referred to residential treatment for PTSD/TBI finds he cannot afford to go. The problem of gaining access to treatment when it requires absence from employment is a significant issue considering the Rand Study estimates 300,000 PTSD sufferers from the Iraq/Afghanistan War—once they leave active duty status, Guard, Reserve, and recent veterans must choose between a paycheck (and paying the family bills) or treatment that often requires absence from work.”

For years USA Cares has been promoting “Red Shirt Fridays” to support the troops fighting in the Global War on Terror in the wake of 9/11. The program has received support all across the country from business owners to individuals. According to Roger Stradley, a retired US Army Command Sergeant Major and founder of USA Cares, “It’s very gratifying to see Americans wearing red on Fridays in support for all the Service Members who make such sacrifices to protect our freedom”.


California Community Foundation Provides Substantial Grant to USA Cares

USA Cares Executive Director Bill Nelson announced today that the organization had received a $2,000,000 grant from the Iraq Afghanistan Deployment Impact Fund of the California Community Foundation. The notification, which was accompanied by the first of two checks for $1,000,000, was the third time IADIF has granted funds to USA Cares, which has been assisting post 9/11 US Military Veterans and their families since its inception in 2003.

Diminutive Cheryl Bruce, the Volunteer and Outreach Coordinator of USA Cares, was summoned to the lobby where a panting US Postal Carrier was stacking a virtual wall of carefully packaged boxes. Each was labeled “Care of Operation Brave Boxer” and each was heavy enough to make others in the office wonder what could be inside.

Hope Comes Together to Assist Operation Iraqi Freedom Veteran

Vermont National Guard Solder, Stephen Larkin of Brookfield, VT was deployed with his unit, HHC 2nd Battalion, part of Task Force Green Mountain to Iraq in 2006. During that time he received back injuries while guarding the Iraq/Kuwait border at camp Navistar. Stephen has also been diagnosed with post traumatic stress syndrome (PTSD).

First Federal Savings Bank Holds Second Annual Golf Event

Cecelia Jeffery, the Volunteer and Outreach Coordinator for USA Cares jumped out of her chair and shouted “She’s on fire! That woman in Georgia is just too good for words!” After the commotion had died down and other office personnel learned it was joy not tragedy that prompted the outburst, Cecelia went on to add “Jennifer Housley is a God-send. We have needed someone in Georgia and now we have the best person we could have ever imagined.”


Boonedock’s Sees Red on Fridays

A new business in Vine Grove has joined the USA Cares Red Shirt Fridays campaign to show the community it supports military families. A USA Cares Family Resource Coordinator mentioned the Red Shirt Fridays program to the Boonedock’s manager while at the restaurant, and owner Sherry Boggs immediately came out to the table with a donation. She didn’t hesitate when asked if she would be interested in joining the team. Boggs was in the Air Force, and her husband Joseph was in the Army. And they know Vine Grove is very pro military, which made the decision that much easier.


International Liasion Officers Meet at USA Cares

Brett Pyles, Operations Manager for the Hardin County Water District No. 1 presented a check before an assembled crowd of about 120 golfers awaiting the “Shotgun Start” of the Annual Charity Golf Scramble sponsored by Hardin County Water District No. 1 and Veolia Water. The Lindsey Golf Course at Fort Knox was the site of the event and USA Cares Executive Director Bill Nelson, accompanied by volunteers and staff members, was on hand to receive the generous proceeds.

A special patriotic Louisville Slugger custom bat is available at http://www.sluggergifts.com. The bat is a 34” full size adult bat with a red handle and a blue barrel. The Louisville Slugger oval, USA Cares’ logo, and engraved text are in white. Michelle Fournier has spent almost twenty years in the United States Army including two tours of duty in Iraq. Along the way she has amassed a host of decorations including two Bronze Stars. However she is not showing any signs of slowing down and now keeps her active Army Reserve uniform in the closet and carries a California Highway Patrol badge as she starts each work day. And, on the weekends and days off, she fights to ensure that the families of the Service Members still deployed do not suffer because of their loved one’s deployment in Iraq or Afghanistan. To do this she has teamed with USA Cares as the Key Volunteer for the State of California.

USA Cares, a world-wide non-profit 501(c) 3 organization, distributes pre-paid Wal-Mart cards on an emergency basis to assist the families of deployed Military Personnel who are experiencing difficulty as the result of a loved one’s service. “The people who we supply these cards to are in immediate need of things for the family like food, fuel to get to medical appointments, work, their unit or other essentials,” said Cecilia Jeffery, Volunteer and Outreach Coordinator with USA Cares. “Wiring of these cards to a store near the family allows us to respond quicker than any other mechanism we have ever used” concluding that “the availability of Wal-Mart stores and the broad line of products they have available can handle a host of situations.”
