Khye Hatfill, a twice-deployed combat veteran recently accepted a position with one of the USA’s largest construction and engineering firms, KBR, a USA Cares Jobs for Vets employment partner. This husband and father of two represents the first of what will be many veterans who will be hired and trained in skills that provide a career path and job security for years to come. This veteran was vectored to this Fortune 500 target by retired Army Sergeant Major and Jobs for Vets Program Manager, Bob Casher. While noting that unemployment rates for returning OIF/OEF veterans are at least 50% higher than the current dismal national average, Casher stated, “Our Jobs for Vets Program is designed to bring together veterans who need and want a well-paying career and industry partners who know the value of having a veteran for an employee.”

USA Cares speaks to unanswered needs—largely financial—in the lives of post-9/11 service men and women. These needs often stand in the way of the basics such as food, shelter, and access to medical treatment. Not only does USA Cares endeavor to answer these needs, it looks to determine the root cause of the need itself. Executive Director Bill Nelson commented, “We realized that civilian unemployment was at the heart of many of the financial issues our veterans are facing and thus started the Jobs for Vets program in response. For example, a huge percentage of our foreclosure and eviction cases were driven by unemployment encountered after a service member returned home from deployment.”

What differentiates the USA Cares Jobs for Vets program from any of a number of similar programs is that it directs qualified veterans to organizations with immediate employment needs who have also committed to providing guaranteed training in a skill for life. Further, USA Cares will assist jobs candidate financially—providing for the cost of uniforms, tools, travel to interviews and relocation—factors that can prove cost-prohibitive for many job seekers.
